After school program making a difference

Another story I found and helped produce on a free after school program that was helping kids with behavior issues sort with counseling. I did this story with my classmates Chelsea Vaughn and Shuya Zheng.

Social Media

I interned as a producer at KMIZ, which is Mid-Missouri's ABC affiliate channel. I worked for the sports department and helped them shoot games, and most importantly produce their 30 minute sports cast every Sunday night. Sports director Austin Kim was with the KMIZ team since 2013 and this is the last ever show he anchored. I helped him produce the show by writing his scripts, cutting his VO on tight deadlines and staying in his ear during the newscast to make sure everything was on schedule.

For the Columbia Missourian newspaper I was a member of the social media/community outreach team. The community outreach team gave me an opportunity to connect with an audience in ways I haven’t before. Through snapchat, UGC gallery’s or Facebook and Twitter posts we’ve gotten our content to readers in new ways and gotten feedback from them that helped our newsroom grow. I’ve explored new ways to use these different forms of social media and how they can help increase our viewership. The outreach team has proven to be very important when it comes to creating trust with readers as well. When used right it improves the trust by creating a direct line of communication between the newspaper and the reader. Creating engaging content that you clearly put time and effort into also helps build trust because viewers can tell when you’ve given enough effort in creating the content. Here are a couple of things I’ve worked on this semester with the outreach team that I am most proud of.

Newsy is a online video news service in Columbia, Missouri that I have worked for thanks to their partnership with the Missouri School of Journalism. I have written headlines for their live stream, stories for their website and I have produced videos. Here are some examples of the work I have helped produce while at Newsy.
